exhibition of fine art mosaics curated by Sonia King
Opening
reception with the artists:
Sunday,
March 7, 2004 (2-5 PM)
With musical

In this exhibition, the ancient art of mosaics is reinterpreted
as a contemporary sculptural medium. THE SUM OF ALL PARTS features
the works of mosaic artists from Dallas, San Antonio and Austin.
The curator of this exhibition, Sonia King, has assembled an inspiring
collection of artwork by modern mosaic artists. The works often
combine a variety of mosaic media and styles. The focus of this
show is to promote the expression of mosaics as a fine art medium.
The goal of the participating artists is to increase the public
awareness of the distinction between mosaic as decorative craft
and mosaic as fine art.
Some of the artists in this invitational show are Karen Crowe,
Sarah Zirkel, Julie Richey, Sherri King, Gladys Gostin and Noman
Tellis. A selection of works by Sonia King, will also be on display.
The Curator,
Sonia King, creates one-of-a-kind, contemporary mosaics for gallery,
architectural, community and home settings. She is currently creating
four large mosaic walls for Children's Medical Center of Dallas.
Her award-winning art is exhibited both nationally and internationally
and is represented in private, public and corporate collections.
Ms. King has visited ancient mosaic sites and studied with modern
mosaic artists around the world. She is a founding member and
President of the Society of American Mosaic Artists as well as
the instructor in mosaics at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas.
Additionally, Sonia has been granted membership and serves as
a Director of the Associazone Internazionale Mosacisti Contemporanei
(AIMC) in Ravenna, Italy. She has spoken on mosaic art in England,
France and Brazil and is now teaching classes internationally.
Ms. King is also the author of Mosaic
Techniques & Traditions: Projects and Designs from Around
the World, a full-color, hardback book from Sterling Publishing.
The book provides historical information on mosaics and mosaic-making
traditions from around the world, extensive discussion of materials
and design issues, in-depth technical instruction on the creation
of mosaics as well as seventeen projects. Additionally, the book
features a running gallery showcasing a variety of works by international,
contemporary mosaic artists.
A RECEPTION WITH THE ARTISTS will be held on Sunday, March 7,
2004 from 2 to 5 PM. Reception patrons will also be able to attend
the free White Rock Rhythms jazz concert featuring BL
Lacerta and Jazz Combo # 1 at 2 PM. Both, the exhibition and
