Canvas and Paper

Recent Works by Carl N. Sidle and Arthello Beck, Jr.

Canvas and Paper is collaboration between fine art photographer Carl N. Sidle and painter Arthello Beck, Jr. In this exhibit, the contrasting styles and techniques of the artists merge to create a common visual language of ideas.

Mr. Sidle is among the best artist/photojournalists of Texas. His striking and powerful images have been captured in film for the last two decades. Trained as a fine printer, Mr. Sidle beautifully utilizes his technical and artistic abilities to present a series of twenty photographs that deal with the experiences of the African American community. Mr. Sidle has collaborated in photographic projects with other visual artists that include R. C. Hickmans, Marion Butts and Ed White. Mr. Sidle has exhibited his work at the Irving Arts Center, the African American Museum of Art of Dallas, The Bath House Cultural Center, the South Dallas Cultural Center, Lakewood Library and the Thornton Foundation.

Mr. Beck's mastery of color and composition is evident on his paintings. Mr. Beck has traveled to Africa and other places around the world (Jamaica, Brazil, Egypt, Senegal, London) where he has gained the inspiration and knowledge to paint the places and cultures he has encountered. The elegant classical compositions of Mr. Beck make him one of the most outstanding artist of the region. Mr. Beck owns an art studio/gallery in Oak Cliff where he works and displays his artwork. The first official collaboration between Mr. Sidle and Mr. Beck happened last year when they exhibited together at the Irving Arts Center.
