LA
LOTERIA is an old game of chance played in Mexico and Central
America.
The game
resembles a form of bingo that uses pictures
instead of numbers. La lotería is played in fairs or at
home. To play the game, each player is given a card that contains
sixteen pictures. Beans or some other kind of markers are used
to show which pictures have been called. The person who is selected
to call or sing out the pictures has a deck of 54 cards with
all the pictures in the game. As the cards are being called out,
the first person to get four pictures in a row, either vertically,
horizontally or diagonally hollers out ¡LOTERIA, LOTERIA!
letting everybody know that he or she has just won the game. The
game of La Lotería has been produced by popular artists
throughout Mexico for many decades. There are different versions
of the game, all beautiful variations of the same 54 symbols.
The images from the game depict common everyday objects, places
and characters that are easily recognized and significant to
the traditions and culture of Mexico and Latin America. Some
examples of Lotería images are: the mermaid, the watermelon,
the flower pot, the sun, the umbrella, the musician, the lady,
the heart and many others.
A NIGHT OF LOTERIA is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2004 from
7-9 PM. This event will give the public a chance to meet some
of the artists and win prizes by playing the game using a deck
of cards that contain reproductions of the original artwork
from this show.
