A
group of
local theater companies will descend on the Bath House Cultural
Center again this July for the Sixth Annual Festival
of Independent Theatres.
FIT was created as an outlet for smaller companies without a
permanent performance space to give them an opportunity to produce
seldom seen, new, or avant-garde works. FIT exists to promote
awareness and growth of Dallas area theatre through collaboration,
participation and cultivation.
FIT is an opportunity for directors
and actors to experiment; for design and technical staff to be
challenged with constraints; for local writers to be showcased
in premiere productions; and for audiences to experience an abundant
mix of performances.
The productions perform in a rotating repertory
during the four weeks of
the festival.
Funding
for the 6th annual Festival of Independent Theatres is provided
by TACA and, in part, by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural
Affairs.
Special
events during this year's Festival include children's
entertainment, the popular State of the Arts discussion, and
the new
Salon du FIT. This bohemian retreat and alternative performance
space
will invite both audience and artist to meet, chat and enjoy
an
interactive FIT. The diversity of the independent theatre community
is
reflected in the diversity of the productions ranging from classic
comedies to multi-media performance art, and from family matinees
to
late night cabaret. The popular State of the Arts discussion
will
return on Tuesday, August 3, featuring nationally recognized
theatre
speakers leading a discussion on Theater: Dead or Alive?
Supported,
in part, by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.
