Angela Wilson
The heroic notions of two larger-than-life men have an immediate impact on the lives of a slave and her southern mistress. The dreams of all four "duke it out" in a dramatic comedy that examines the legacy of the lofty word "freedom." Angela Wilson, playwright, and Carl Savering, director, are the co-founders of Theatre Quorum. This is the third play of Ms. Wilson's to be developed at Theatre Quorum. Rhonda Boutte', a company member of both Undermain and Kitchen Dog Theatres, comes to TQ for the first time to bring the unconquerable slave, Eugenie, to life in a role that the playwright wrote with Boutte' in mind. "Rhonda Boutte' accepting the role of Eugenie (when she normally takes the summers off) gave me the confidence to revisit a painful episode in the American past and explore it in both a comedic and serious way because I was hesitant to create words on behalf of an enslaved African American women, from whose point of view the action of the play revolves," Ms. Wilson said. The show will be directed by Theatre Quorum's Artistic Director, Carl Savering, who directed last year's FIT piece "One Good Beating." Set design and fight choreography is by Pat Watson, who also plays the role of Mr. Abel, the assassinated President Lincoln. |
