BAD ROOF

by Tim Hatcher
Directed by Kimberlyn Crowe
Featuring Kevin Keating, Lissa Creola, Lulu Ward and Theo Moffat

An Appalachian man has climbed the career ladder at a non-union coal mine. In his ongoing quest to find "a wife, a kid, and a surface job" he discovers that the widows of the miners are more of a threat to him than any danger the mine could hold.

Tim Hatcher resides in Oak Cliff and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, and is a past recipient of the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship awarded by the Texas Institute of Letters. His other produced plays include "The Odyssey", "Bartleby", "Family Room", "The Dodo", "The Death of Floyd Collins", "Covered Dish", and "Brendene". His children's plays include "The White Rainbow Trail", "Cosmic Soup", and "The Happiness Shirt".

Employed at DNA Productions, Tim is an animator whose credits include the feature "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" and its spin-off series on Nickelodeon. "Bad Roof" is a one-act drama the genesis of which was a writing exercise assigned to Tim during his pursuit of an MFA at the Yale School of Drama. The exercise called for each playwright to create a scene that was in some way inspired by a scene in Shakespeare's "Richard the Third". In that scene, a ruthless Richard attempts to woo Lady Anne, the widow of the man he has murdered. In spite of her hatred for him, Lady Anne is eventually persuaded to accept an engagement ring from him. The challenge for Tim, he decided, was to create another context in which a woman is wooed by the man she believes is responsible for her husband's death. Once that initial scene was completed, Tim allowed this new set of characters to grow into a short play of their own, which ultimately bore little resemblance to its Shakespearean inspiration.

Ground Zero Theater Company is dedicated to the development and production of new works by local and regional playwrights.
