Produced
by Kim Corbet.
White Rock Rhythms is in its second year of providing great
jazz to Bath House Cultural Center audiences. Kim Corbet
produces the First Sunday matinee series, which is sponsored
by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.
Participating groups prove the great diversity of the mostly
underground Dallas jazz scene, with styles ranging from
traditional swing and New Orleans Street beat to contemporary
progressive and the Avant Garde.
On Sunday, January 16, 2005, CIRCO brings together some
of the best jazz players in the area to present a global
array of styles, including the fire of Uruguayan percussionist,
Ricardo Bozas. Pianist/accordionist, Lee Tomoboulian, and
his vocalist wife, Betty, lead the group.
The group also features one of the finest jazz soloists
in the Southwest, Pete Brewer. Pete's performance and studio
work has made him a legend and always worth catching. The
rhythm section is filled out by bassist Brian Warthan and
Dennis Durick on drums. Dennis is no stranger to White Rock
Rhythm audiences. He's also played with Quartet Out and
The Flipside Trio.
CIRCO is an all-star band. The musicians are incredibly
experienced and mature in their compositional and expressive
range. Their athletic grace of sound is world class. CIRCO's
roots lie in the late 70s Jazz Fusion of such groups as
Spyro Gyra, which itself was originally inspired by what
Stan Kenton called Progressive Jazz 30 years earlier. Progressive
Jazz combined Jazz, 20th century Classical music and Afro-Cuban
rhythms.
Fusion bands combined Jazz, Soul and funky Latin grooves,
often fueled by the Cuban Salsa featured in the hottest
dance clubs across the country. With even further refinement,
a spin off of Fusion became New Age Jazz and, eventually,
Smooth Jazz, the most visible of contemporary Jazz styles.
