Chinese Children's Art on the Environment

Sep 16-Oct 9, 2004

Exhibition curator (Bath House Cultural Center show): Christopher Clay Oehlschlaeger

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTISTS: Sunday, September 19, 2004 (6-8 PM)
Shown concurrently with White Rock Lake Artists Studio Tour exhibition

Flying the Child's Hope, an exhibition of drawings and paintings by Chinese children, was organized by The 1990 Institute and China’s Center for Environmental Education and Communication of the State Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with China National Children’s Center in Beijing.

In the Fall of 2004, this show will be divided in three sections and exhibited at the Bath House Cultural Center (September 16-October 9), the Crow Collection of Asian Art (September 1-November 30) and the Dallas Children's Museum (Sep 13-Nov 30). The Bath House exhibition was curated by Christopher Clay Oehlschlaeger as part of the Texas Commission on the Arts' Texas Apprenticeship Program and includes about thirty pieces of art created by local students from Northwood Hills Elementary School.

Xie Zhenhua, Minister of China's State Environmental Protection Agency, writes about this exhibition on the preface of the show's catalogue: "Flying the Child's Hope has provided the children with an opportunity to showcase their talents and communicate their minds through art. Using brushes and pencils they tell the world their concerns about the environment as well as their wishes for a better future, through their innocent eyes and hearts. Anyone who has seen these artworks will undoubtedly be deeply moved by these children and prompted to think about his or her own responsibility in making this world a better place for generations to come."

Clay Oehlschlaeger curated the section of artwork that appears at the Bath House Cultural Center. Mr. Oehlschlaegeris a participant of the Bath House Cultural Center’s Gallery Apprenticeship Program , which is co-sponsored by the Texas Commission on the Arts through the Texas Apprenticeship Program. The Program provides the opportunity for Texas artists and cultural organizations to offer training opportunities for individuals pursuing careers in the arts or arts administration. The Bath House Cultural Center Gallery Apprenticeship Program was designed to encourage the professional development of Texas artists and/or arts administrators.
